Pocket Guide: Butterflies of East Africa offers an introduction to the amazing butterfly diversity of East Africa. The 247 species described are just a drop in the ocean of our insect diversity, but it's hoped they will inspire more interest, awareness and appreciation of these fascinating, strange and wonderful creatures. On bright, sunny days, after good rains, large numbers of Butterflies can be seen flitting about. You can spot them everywhere in East Africa: in a rural or garden setting, in a crowded city or when travelling through the bush. With a little practice and experience, simple observation will enable you to identify and name many of these colourful, striking and fairly approachable creatures. East Africa is home to over 2,500 different species of butterfly, a sizeable percentage of the 20,000 that have been described globally. The richness and diversity of butterfly species in East Africa is a reflection of the diversity of habitats in the region. While many species are ubiquitous and common across the entire region, others are restricted to forests, mountains, isolated hills and other 'island'-like habitats, where isolation has caused them to evolve into distinct, often endemic species and subspecies. Several widespread East African butterflies are polymorphic, the adults of the same species having several different colour patterns or 'forms'. There are also quite a few species displaying sexual dimorphism, where males and females of the same species look completely different.
