From the acknowledgements:

This book is an edition of songs that were sung in interviews with Angolan immigrants in Rundu, Namibia. We spoke about many things, including some sensitive subjects related to the recent history of warfare in Angola. However much I would like to mention their names and thank each one of these performers personally, most of them asked me not to reveal their identity. So I can only express my gratitude in general terms and thank everybody who welcomed me and my family in Namibia when we were staying there in 1996, 1997 and 1999. Rebecca Kastherody, Dominga Antonio and Moses Mpande did not object to their names being included in this edition: it is an honour to thank such diligent and committed fieldwork assistants.

The book forms part of a study on the history of war in south-east Angola. The study was carried out at the Institute of African Studies, within the framework of the Sonderforschungsbereich 389 (Collaborative Research Center) ACACIA, at the University of Cologne in Germany. Heike Behrend, as the leader of the project, has been an encouraging supervisor. I would like to thank her very much for the spirit of exchange and co-operation in which she gave her invaluable comments on the research proceedings. I am also deeply indebted to Axel Fleisch. Together we edited a book on narratives that were told in the same context as the songs published in this book. Our discussions on the relations between history and language have continued and with his generous advice on linguistic matters he greatly contributed to this edition.
