About: Die Dagboek van Hendrik Witbooi: Kaptein van die Witbooi-Hottentotte, 1884-1905

In precise keeping with its founding aim, "to print or reprint for distribution among members, and for sale to the public, rare and valuable books, pamphlets and documents relating to the history of South Africa", Van Riebeeck Society / Van Riebeeck-Vereniging has decided to reprint volumes of its own which have long been out of print. Die Dagboek van Hendrik Witbooi: Kaptein van die Witbooi-Hottentotte, 1884-1905 is a collection of letters, rather than a diary, this remarkable work documents the activities of the Nama captain, Hendrik Witbooi, who resisted German incursions into the lands near the Gamsberg, south-west of Windhoek. Presented in the introduction of this volume as 'the terror of Hereroland', Witbooi is now recognised as an outstanding guerilla leader. This is a rare account of such a man in his own words. Some years ago the collecting and editing of the material for this volume was entrusted to Mr. P. J. Bruchhausen, who was unfortunately not able to complete the work. The South-West Africa Scientific Society, Windhoek, very generously offered their services, and thanks to their co-operation the documents are now fully edited and available to members.
