About: Voices for change: Dialogues on opportunities and perspectives with the youth in the Kalahari

My (Wilna Hartbees's) intention for this publication, Voices for change: Dialogues on opportunities and perspectives with the youth in the Kalahari, is clear: I would like people to read it and see what's going on in our town, Aranos. Other people should see that there are young people who are trying to contribute to the development of our country, Namibia. This book should show clearly that we are speaking out. We talk about what's not working in our town. Readers should understand that we have taken our first step towards finding solutions for our problems. Somewhere in the Kalahari there are young people who still struggle, although we now live in an independent country. There are a lot of poor people in this place who survive off scraps from the abattoir. Among them are many young people with broken dreams. How will they be able to improve their circumstances? Claire Weemaes's presence has influenced my life in a good way. I never knew I had it in me to interview people, be a group member in an organisation, let my voice be heard, or inspire other young people. It was a valuable experience to do research on my own home town and interview people because I learned things I didn't know about before. I came across problems that I never knew existed. It was a great learning experience. Claire Weemaes (born 1984), has an MA in ethnology, art education and intercultural communication from the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany. Her first visits to Namibia in 2000 and 2003 were part of a school exchange and voluntary work programme. Claire Weemaes lives in Munich.
