About: Orania

You will not stumble across Orania. You'll have to set out deliberately in search of the town if you want to experience it first hand. It is situated in the Northern Cape of South Africa, on the bank of the Orange River, about a two-hour drive from Kimberley and slightly longer from Bloemfontein. Some tourists are merely inquisitive: others see coming here as a kind of pilgrimage to view the famous statue erected in honour of the koeksister; and some are more critical and see the establishment of Orania as an attempt to resurrect apartheid on a smaller scale. With photographs by Michael Hammond and text by Hanlie Retief, this unique book offers an intimate, multi-layered and at times surreal portrait of the controversial self-styled Afrikaner “homeland”.
