About: Getaway Guide to the Karoo, Namaqualand and Kalahari

The Getaway Guide covers the Karoo, and the Namaqualand and Kalahari regions of the Northern Cape. In the first four chapters, we provide some background and practical travel information on aspects of the region most relevant to visitors, as well as a brief look at the plants, animals and landscapes of the area's national parks and reserves and an overview of what travellers might expect to encounter here. Chapter 5 serves as an introduction to the vast Karoo, which has been broken down into the four individual chapters focusing on the northeast, southeast, central and northwest, and southwest. These chapters cover the main towns in each respective region, offering useful information on where to sleep, eat and drink, and some idea of what there is to see and do in these places.

Because farmstays offer such insight into the area and are such a popular reason to visit the region we look at these too. Chapters 10 and 11 cover Namaqualand, and 12, 13 and 14 the Kalahari. While we have concentrated on the main attractions and activities for the broader region as well as the individual destinations listed here, the Karoo and its surrounds is a vast and largely unexplored terrain, offering so much more than its popular image may suggest. While it may not be a traditional travel-to destination, it has always been a pivotal travel-through hot spot and those fortunate to have experienced its charms remain devoted visitors. If you would like to venture beyond our suggested routes and stopovers, contact the relevant tourist information or ask your Karoo hosts for suggestions on a recommended itinerary.
