About: Getaway Guide to the Garden Route

This guide covers the Garden Route from Gourits River to the Storms River - bookended by the 2 landmark bridges - and is specifically designed to assist independent travellers. However, due to the sheer scale of the activities, attractions, accommodation and eateries that fall into the area, it is by no means a comprehensive guide. What we have aimed to do is to provide you with a guide to the best the area has to offer, rather than everything. With regard to places to stay and things to do, we have listed only our own selection of what we consider to be the best and most representative. In the first 3 chapters, we provide some background and practical travel information on aspects of the region most relevant to visitors, as well as a brief look at the 'Calls to the Wild' - the plants, animals and landscapes of the area's national parks and reserves; then an overview of what travellers might expect to encounter here. Chapter 4 covers what are widely regarded as the top 6 hikes in the region, broken down into slackpacking and full-pack trails. Then in chapters 5-12 the Getaway Guide to the Garden Route covers the region in a west-to-east direction (as if coming from the direction of Cape Town and travelling towards Port Elizabeth). Each chapter pertains to a major town along the route and provides information on what there is to see and do, where to stay, where to eat, and other relevant information we hope will assist visitors in planning their itineraries according to their own tastes and preferences.
