He and his wife, Sophy, arrived in Cape Town in 1848 with a mission to increase the number of Anglican clergy represented in the British colonies of what was eventually to become South Africa, and to implement a church building programme. What the Bishop achieved was nothing short of remarkable; within 25 years he was instrumental in the erection of 50 churches, 40 of which were designed by Sophy.
