About: The New Game Rancher

Since the promulgation of the Stock Theft Act in 1991 which permitted private game ownership, game ranching in South Africa has achieved spectacular successes: game farms were established on land which was unprofitable for stock or crop farming, and game numbers of all species and in particular of rare and endangered species, have increased dramatically. Game farms have increased biodiversity by contributing to the conservation and protection of numerous other non-game species and have given rise to an industry worth R20 billion which provides employment for an estimated 140 000 people. The New Game Rancher provides a succinct guide to the complete spectrum of game ranching in South Africa and is illustrated with more than 400 full colour photos and line drawings. It is a collection of contributions from zoologists, ecologists, geneticists, veterinarians, academics, conservationists and experienced game ranchers.

An introductory chapter outlines the history and growth of the game business, and the four pillars of game ranching business, namely breeding, ecotourism, hunting and meat production. Chapters 2 and 3 discuss various general aspects of game farming: veld management, planning, nutrition, predator management and capture of game animals. Chapter 4 deals with the main species farmed by game ranchers: these include large, medium and small antelope, buffalo, zebra, rhino, crocodiles and ostriches and details the types of management used with each particular group of animals. Chapter 5 deals with diseases, parasites and poisonings of the main game species dealt with in the book. Three indexes complete the contents. The New Game Rancher is ideal for anyone with an interest in game farming, both game ranchers and those associated or interested in the business.
