The intention of this book is to provide as much information as possible on the manner in which the mail of the various components and contingents of the United Nations Transition Assistance Group was handled.

Owing to the large number of nations to participate in the UN peace-keeping mission in Namibia and the resultant multitude of cachets, postal stationery and approaches to handling mail, however, it does not claim to be a complete overview, especially as it is one of philately's inherent characteristics that items are sometimes discovered years, and even decades, after the end of a certain period in postal history.

Nevertheless, it has been attempted to collate as much of the information available, thus providing a basis for further study. The headquarters of UNTAG were situated in the Philip Troskie House, a former Railways hostel on the corner of Leutwein and Uhland Streets.

This building, vacated for UNTAG, however, accommodated only the offices of the civilian component, i.e. the office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the election unit, the police monitors, the staff of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the staff of the Chief of the Administrative Officer.
