Description:

Jeremy stands in his spacious garden, looking at a picture of his dead sister-in-law. The sky is cloudless. The air is still. The garden is cool and tranquil, silent enough for him to hear the violent thought in his head echoing as it takes over his life. Its voice steadies him. Jeremy thinks he knows what he has to do. "Control is overrated." The message is as clear as the day's blue sky. There is something to be said, Jeremy begins to believe, for letting go and allowing your demons to run your life. It's like flicking a switch and watching your life instantly swing to cruise control. You don't have to think about things too much after that. If more people let go, he tells himself, there would be fewer deaths by heart attack. He decides to let go. To relax. Allow the voice to guide him. Sensing him yield, the voice ups the stakes. "Somebody has to pay," it insists. His lips stretch to form a smile. He cedes control to the voice. He walks back into his house and heads for the study. There, he puts his sister-in-law's picture back in the same desk drawer where he keeps the gun. He takes the gun and leaves the room, closing the door behind him.
