Description:

In parts humorous, This way up is a novel on relations and other complications: They were the perfect couple on a breakfast plate. Stella hated cooked tomato but liked mushrooms, and Max couldn't stand mushrooms but loved cooked tomatoes. The problem with cooked tomatoes was that they always got so volcanically hot, and Stella had burnt her tongue severely on every occasion she'd ever tried them. She knew they got hot when cooked, it wasn't news to her, but somehow she was never quite cautious enough. It was a life lesson she was destined to never learn. And it was the kind of burn that rendered her tongue numb, scorched and unable to taste anything for days on end. And as strongly as Stella felt about the evils of cooked tomato, Max felt even more strongly about mushrooms of any description, cooked or raw. He couldn't stand them touching anything on his plate, and he'd once even moaned at her for keeping them in the fridge, they offended him that much. There was no tangible reason why he shouldn't like them. No childhood incident or scarring episode as far as Stella knew. It was just one of those things.
