Preface:

The African Archaeology Network (AAN) was formally established in 2004, having grown out of a long-standing association of African archaeologists, institutions and projects with related research interests.

The activities of the AAN include thematic research projects, training initiatives, the publication Studies in the African Past, and an annual meeting of participating scholars.

In 2005 the AAN meeting was held in Windhoek, Namibia, and Volume 5 of Studies in the African Past consists of the papers presented at that meeting, as well as some invited contributions and papers by colleagues who were unable to attend the meeting.

Namibian papers make up the opening chapters of this publication, beginning with that of John and Jill Kinahan presenting new research results from the southern Namib Desert. Karl-Johan Lindholm and John Molin of Uppsala University present the results of post-graduate research in Namibia, on pastoral wells in Omaheke and on community involvement in the management of Twyfelfontein rock engravings site, respectively.

From Namibia, the volume moves to Mozambique, and the research of Solange Macamo on gender structuring of a 15th century stone-walled enclosure site in the Choa Mountains. Chantal Radimilahy and colleagues follow thereafter with the results of an investigation of the St Augustine’s Bay area in south-western Madagascar.

Results of excavations at Kuumbi Cave on Zanzibar, by Paul Sinclair, Felix Chami and Abdurahman Juma are next, with evidence of occupation predating the Last Glacial Maximum. This is followed by Abdurahman Juma’s historical investigation of aboriginal identity on Zanzibar.

Felix Chami continues his ground-breaking work on the antiquity of urban settlement and trade on the East African coast, here with new evidence from Kilwa Kisiwani. Related metallurgical investigations by Bertram Mapunda deal with iron as well as copper production, and the link with coinage minted for the Sultan at Husuni Kubwa on Kilwa. Further research from the east coast of Africa includes Herman Kiriama’s work on the historical archaeology of a Mijikenda site at Kaya Bate north-east of Mombasa.

Gilbert Pwiti and Seke Katsamudanga report the results of excavations at Kamukombe in the mid-Zambezi valley, with new evidence for the rise of Late Iron Age farming economies in that region. The paper is accompanied by Robert Soper’s examination of the ceramic evidence for a typological transition from Kadzi to Musengezi on the basis of the Kamukombe evidence.

From Zimbabwe the volume moves to Nigeria with the work of Adebayo Folorunso and colleagues on the ceramics of Old Oyo, and finally, to David Kiyaga-Mulindwa’s use of ethnographic and archaeological evidence from Mutunda in northern Uganda to investigate the history of the Palwo, a Lwo-speaking community of the Karuma area.

On behalf of the contributing authors and all participating scholars and institutions, the Series Editors and the editors of this volume wish to acknowledge the continuing support of Sida, the Swedish International Development Agency, and its research cooperation component SAREC.
