About: Stoked!

Stoked!* is Chris Bertish's story of how, then a skinny little kid from Kenilworth in Cape Town, South Africa, managed to travel halfway around the world without sponsorship, and then outwit, outsmart and outperform the world’s best-paid professional surfing athletes on a day that changed his life, and the sport of big-wave surfing, forever. Big-wave surfer Chris Bertish was the first South African to brave the monster waves of Mavericks, winning the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational surfing event in the biggest and heaviest waves ever recorded in the history of the sport. That same year, he finished third on the Big Wave World Tour, despite only surfing three of the five events.

*Stoked:
(1) Amped, excited, filled with crazy enthusiasm; pure joy, infectious energy, wild exuberance, adrenaline-fuelled, totally thrilled, naturally high on life.
(2) The feeling you get when you catch your first wave.
(3) The feeling that you just HAVE to catch one more ... and that it should be even bigger and better than the last...

Chris Bertish, born 1974, is a South African surfer, stand-up paddleboarder, adventurer, and motivational speaker. In 2004 he gained recognition as the owner of 'Best Cribbar Barrel Vision Ever' after he pulled into a giant closeout at the infamous big wave spot in Cornwall. He won the Mavericks Big Wave Surf contest in 2009. In March 2017 he completed the first solo, unsupported stand-up paddle board crossing of the Atlantic Ocean.
