About: Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2023

This is the 43rd edition of Platter’s South African Wine Guide, and as ever we've extensively revised and updated it for 2023. In the process we've been reminded of one of the intentions of the guide's founders, John Platter and Erica Platter, to not merely sit in judgement over the wines being reviewed, but to understand and convey, via the tasting notes and winery overview, the winegrower's intention and how it relates to the soil, climate and terrain of the vine, and ultimately to the wine in the glass. We've also not deviated from the original goal of tasting, rating and describing as many as possible South African-made wines, available locally and overseas during the currency of the book. That said, participation in the guide remains voluntary, and a limited number of producers, for a variety of reasons, elect not to enter wines or opt to be omitted entirely. Other wineries are not yet ready to be featured, and we look forward to including them next time. Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2023 features over 8,000 wines from more than 900 producers, along with 100-point equivalents for the familiar star ratings, and useful information for learning about and travelling in our beautiful winelands.
