Description:

Collecting cards of all kinds have alway been a successful marketing idea. Shell had its share in these nicly printed images of Wild Flowers of Southern Africa and together with the Botanical Society of South Africa (Botaniese Verenging van Suid-Afrika), National Botanic Gardens of South Africa (Nasionale Botanies Tuine van Suid-Afrika), Flora Coservation Competition (Florabewaringskompetisie) they introduced this topic to the generally younger collectors. In his foreword the Director of the National Botanic Gardens of South Africa, H. B. Rycroft, remarked: "South Africa has a wealth of wild flowers, some still growing in profusion but others becoming rare as man encroaches on their natural habitats. Many of our flowers are very beautiful and highly acclaimed overseas but only lately have people here in our own country become more aware of the floral riches with which nature has endowed us. There are more than 20 000 species of wild flowers in South Africa and naturally only a small percentage of these can be illustrated here. By collecting pictures for this album I hope that both children and adults will come to learn more about our indigenous vegetation and to appreciate its value. Through conservation and a better knowledge of our environment we can save our flora for future generations. I am sure you will enjoy collecting 'Our Wild Flower Heritage' which has been supported by Shell South Africa who have also generously donated funds for the work of the National Botanic Gardens of South Africa at Kirstenbosch and elsewhere."
