About: Democracy and Education in Namibia and Beyond

Democracy and Education in Namibia and Beyond is a contribution to the literature on education and democratic emancipation in society, with special reference to Namibia. It is an important reflection on the essential elements of democracy and differing philosophical approaches to education, providing context for a broad-based assessment of key aspects of the Namibian education environment. Namibia's education system faces some critical challenges that need to be dealt with. Some of these challenges date back to the time before the country attained its independence, many originate from the time after 1990. Although education has enjoyed some attention from the Namibian governments which were opting for an uniform national system based on the principle of Education for All, in reality and considering the poor educational potential of remote and rural regions of Namibia, there is still a long way to go. Elizabeth Magano Amukugo holds a PhD from the Swedish Lund University. Formerly a Member of Namibian Parliament, she serves on a number of African and international advisory groups for education. Currently, she is Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Foundations and Management, Faculty of Education (UNAM).
