Johannesburg Then and Now captures the dramatic transformation of the City of Gold - from a temporary diggers' camp in the nineteenth century to the cosmopolitan metropolis of today. In a series of fascinating juxtapositions, rare archival photographs, dating from the 1880s to the 1940s, are contrasted with modern images of the same locations, accompanied by brief commentaries on the changing scenes. The result is a fascinating portrait of a city that has been in a state of continuous evolution since its inception, always building on the past to reinvent the present.
Marc Latilla works in the music industry and is the creator of Johannesburg l912, a blog covering the heritage and history of the city His articles have appeared in various print and online publications and his work has been used in a range of heritage, architectural and historical research projects.
