Hiking Beyond Cape Town opens a gateway to the countless trails and tracks that await hikers beyond the confines of the city. This collection of day trips outside of Cape Town features 40 trails, fanning out from the south coast to the west and covering a range of varied hikes in between. All the hikes are tailored for single-day trips, although the last two (Trails 39 and 40) can be combined to form a two-day outing. Each hike entry includes an accurate, up-to-date route description, a map of the trail, and directions for getting to the start. In each case, an upfront summary outlines the distance, duration, grade of difficulty, and elevation of the hike, as well as other details. A brief introduction provides expert advice on gear, planning and preparation. There is so much more to hiking than just the physical experience. It's a journey of discovery into the history of the area you are hiking through and a ringside seat to some of the most varied and beautiful flora in the world. Abundant birdlife and the occasional animal sighting add to the richness of the experience. Information about these aspects is provided at the start of every trail description.
Nina du Plessis, daughter of travel and hiking author Willie Olivier, spends most of her weekends on a trail somewhere in the mountains of the Western Cape, or further afield. She lives in Gordon's Bay.
Willie Olivier has explored the highways and byways of southern Africa on foot, by road and by four-wheel drive for the past five decades. He is the author of numerous books, including the highly successful Hiking Trails of South Africa, African Adventurer's Guide: Namibia, Exploring the Natural Wonders of South Africa and Touring in South Africa.
