About: Geological Wonders of Namibia

Our Earth has a long history, starting some 4.5 billion years ago when it formed from the accretion of objects orbiting the sun as well as from meteorites originating outside our solar system. The geological history of Namibia itself is very old and complex as it encompasses some 2.65 Ga of Earth's history. The oldest rocks found in Namibia were formed 2.65 Ga in the Middle Precambrian. Cratons, being the large stable blocks of crust that underpin the continents, can be found in the Hoarusib Valley and in the Kunene Region. In southern Namibia the ground we walk on is composed of rocks from the Namaqua Metamorphic Complex deposited more than 1.8 Ga and visible at the bottom of the Fish River Canyon. These examples, some out of many, are introduced in Geological Wonders of Namibia, an informative portrayal of the key highlights of Namibia's landscapes and landforms.
