About: Developmentalism, Dependency, and the State: Industrial Development and Economic Change in Namibia since 1900

'Developmentalism, Dependency, and the State' explores economic development in Namibia from 1900 to present day, with a principal interest in industrial development and the role of the state in facilitating its progression. The main questions which are addressed are what industries have been able to develop in Namibia and why? and 'has the Namibian state played a role in supporting industrial development and what explains its action or inaction?'. The line of enquiry is based on the premise that industrial development and economic diversification were the main (economic) variables that explained why some countries were able to rapidly increase their wealth during the 20th century whilst others could not achieve a level of economic change that would allow for the quality of life of its citizens to decisively improve. If we accept that industrial development and economic diversification are central to the process of economic development, then trying to understand their fates - what has worked, what has gone wrong, why did an economy move in particular ways - becomes a central point on investigation.
