Scope and structure of the NNB:

The purpose of the Namiblan National Bibliography (NNB) is to list all written materials concerning Namibia, whether they are published inside the country or elsewhere. By South West Africa/Namibia the NNB understands the country ("Gebiet") with its administrative borders of 1975, which include walvisbay and certain smaller Islands offshore. The stress of this third volume lies by the nature of the undertaking on the years 1976 and 1979. But supplements for the years 1971-1977 have been recorded as well.

The NNB lists only documents which the compiler has seen and catalogued himself. Each title-entry will be given at least one location) that is to say, the library where the compiler first saw and catalogued the document. Fortunately here again locations of Namibian libraries have been recorded.

The NNB consists of two parts; the classified list of title-entries, and the author/title-index. The entries are listed according to their subjects, and are arranged broadly according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). The author/title-index comprises all personal and corporate authors, contributors, editors, and other concerned persons, arranged alphabetically. Titles of anonymous and vernacular publications are interfiled. The numbers given refer to the numerus currens of the entries. References - essential in this multilingual country - have been interfiled for the benefit of the user.


Language of the NNB:

The entry of each title is always given in the original language of the document. Unspecific titles usually will receive annotations in the original language of the document. Annotations for and translation of titles in the vernacular are normally given in German. When cataloguing corporate bodies, preference has been given to the official German form of name (if there is any).


Applied cataloguing and filing rules:

Basically the cataloguing of the FINE relies on the RAK (Regein fÜr die Alphabetische Katalogisierung), a joint composition by and for Germanspeaking countries. On the other hand, certain rules of the Anglo-American
Cataloguing Rules (AACR) will maKe up for deficiencies in the RAK. Only title-entries of 'component parts' (analytic entries) have been catalogued, due to the absence of a future ISED(CP). according to the compiler's conception.

The alphabetical order of entries usually follows international standards, filing word by word; hyphens have been filed as blanks; the German and Scandinavian Umlaute 'ä', 'ö', and 'ü' will be filed as 'ae', 'oe', and
'ue' the 'ß' will be filed as 'ss'; and the clicks of the Khoe and Saa languages have been filed according to the traditional filing rules at all Name dictionaries.
