Description:

This is not an orthodox history of the Anglo-Boer War. There is no detailed discussion of the causes or consequences of the war. There are no chapters, no introductions and conclusions, no scientific historical analysis of any specific issue. There are also no critical evaluations of the sources. Rather, it is a book about one of the most significant events in the history of South Africa, incorporating masses of historical material and photographs. As much as possible of the available published primary source material was used, and great care was taken to include only reliable information. In this sense, then, it is a history book - but it is a history book with a difference.

The War Reporter: The Anglo-Boer War through the eyes of the Burghers is an imaginary newspaper. There was no single Republican or Boer newspaper that was published on either a daily, weekly or monthly basis for the whole duration of the Anglo-Boer War. The 'editor', 'reporters' and 'correspondents' of The War Reporter never actually existed. The aim was to publish an account of the course of the war in its totality, meaning not merely the military confrontations. The format represents the way in which the war could have been reported in a pro-Boer weekly newspaper (monthly from September 1900), published in the South African Republic as the war progressed.
