About: First Field Guide to Wild Flowers of Southern Africa

First Field Guide to Wild Flowers of Southern Africa presents some of the more common and interesting groups of plants one is likely to encounter in the field in southern Africa. Most of the groups referred to in the book are represented at the genus level while some, such as orchids, are dealt with at family level. The groups are arranged in alphabetical order. One (or more) photograph is used to depict the more common or typical members of each group described. The common name is given in bold type at the top of the page. The scientific name follows and is printed in italic type. The number of species referrs to species worldwide found in that group.

"Distribution" describes where the plants occur naturally in a world context and then, more specifically, in southern Africa, followed by a simplified account of the more obvious features used to identify these plants in the field. Technical terms have been kept to a minimum, but where they cannot be avoided, a "G" next to the term refers the reader to the Glossary on page 56. "Habitat" describes the vegetation type or biome in which these plants occur. "Flowering time" gives the season in which the plant is in flower. The term "Notes" describes the biology of the plants and, where relevant, their uses, or other points of interest.
