Dances with Devils. A Journalist’s Search for Truth

Author: Jacques Pauw
Publisher: Zebra Press
Cape Town, 2006
ISBN: 9781770073302
Hardcover, 15x23 cm, 400 pages, several colour photos

Description:

For more than a decade, Jacques Pauw has traversed his native continent in pursuit of warlords and drug traffickers, child soldiers and charlatans, adventure and anarchy.

What he found was a rich array of personalities and panoply of stories, ranging from the profoundly tragic to the intensely personal.

Pauw’s stories range from South Africa to Rwanda, from Sierra Leone and the Sudan to Mozambique.

Readers are taken behind the scenes of sensational news reports with compassion, humour and occasional cynicism and emerge in the knowledge that, even if it’s true that there is nothing new out of Africa, the writer has found fresh ways to present time-honoured tales of love, life, misery and mortality.

About the Author:

Having cut his teeth on investigative journalism in print, Jacques Pauw moved into the electronic media in 1994.

A founder member of Vrye Weekblad, he lifted the veil on Vlakplaas and ‘dirty tricks’ funded and authorised by the apartheid government. He has published two books on the subject: In the Heart of the Whore and Into the Heart of Darkness.

Pauw has travelled the length and breadth of Africa to bring television viewers stories about conflict, corruption and human rights abuses.

Currently executive producer of the hard-hitting weekly television series Special Assignment, he has won numerous South African and international journalism awards, twice being named CNN’s African Journalist of the Year and also winning the Vodacom Journalist of the Year award.

Media Reviews:

Mercury (Garth Johnstone):
„Although a dark and depressing portrayal, I found this book „unputdownable“, the best passages being where Pauw gets into the psyche and the reasoning of his 'devils'.“

Preface:

THOSE WHO FARED ON CONGO RIVER BOATS BEFORE ME DESCRIBED them as stinking, noisy, overheated, overcrowded African markets. In the space of twenty-four hours, the MS Tshopo went from being exactly that to a mute and crippled disaster in the making. None of the passengers had slept the night before. The boat-whores had been singularly luckless, makeshift hair salons had no clients and kiosk proprietors didn't even light their paraffin stoves.

The captain, drunk and witless, had steered the ungainly, overcrowded craft into an island and we had narrowly escaped death by drowning or being devoured by the monstrously big crocodiles that patrol the murky waters in search of prey. I was supposedly fulfilling a lifelong dream, inspired by Joseph Conrad's epic voyage more than a century earlier, when he wrote:

'Going up that river was like travelling back to the earliest beginnings of the world, when vegetation rioted on the earth and the big trees were kings.'

My bubble of illusion had been rudely burst. I wasn't even looking at the Congo River any longer. I drew the Stetson-style hat that I had bought in Kinshasa low over my eyes and fantasised about large platters of scrumptious food and bottles of chilled chardonnay. I hadn't eaten for three days, because I didn't dare utilise one of the two toxic pissoirs on board.

Sitting next to me was Jan de Klerk, my virtuous travel companion and cameraman extraordinaire. He put his hand on my shoulder, gave me a reassuring squeeze and said: 'Lighten up, broer. We'll make it.'

Together we had prevailed in African danger zones such as Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Algeria and Sudan, but this trip had me petrified. I didn't answer Jan. I knew he was really just trying to console himself. Then he said: 'You know what you should do?'

'What?'
'If we survive this, why don't you write a book?'

I didn't respond and I gave his suggestion not a moment's thought. Of course, we did survive, eventually limping into a lawless and isolated backwater called Bumba, where we were promptly arrested. We extricated ourselves from that predicament by stuffing greenbacks into a sleazy official's grimy paw until it hurt. Ten days later, we flew back to Johannesburg.

Five years earlier, in the West African country of Sierra Leone, I had interviewed rebel leader Foday Sankoh, one of the worst human beings that Africa ever spat out. I spent more than an hour trying to evoke some sense of responsibility or token of remorse from him for the brutal maiming and murder of thousands of women, men and children.

Afterwards, exhausted and frustrated, I slumped into a chair at a Lebanese restaurant on Freetown's beachfront. My local researcher and interpreter, Allieu Kamara, looked at me pensively, then said:

'You know what you did today?'
'What?' I asked dispiritedly.
'You danced with the devil.'
'What do you mean?'
'You danced with the devil,' he said. 'You took Foday for a leap and a hop around the dance floor. I watched you. You waltzed with him. You went backwards and forwards and left and right, but you kept dancing. That's how you managed to get so much out of him.'

When I asked Allieu where on earth he got this metaphor, he said his journalism lecturer had used it often. He told his students that as journalists they should be prepared to dance with anyone, including the devil. And if necessary, they must dance close and all night long.

'My teacher always said that doctors doctor, lawyers do law, teachers teach and auditors audit. But journalists? They dance.'

Allieu's teacher was either an avid ballroom dancer or an astute philosopher, but either way, the image stayed with me, because it's true. As journalists, we dance. In the endless quest for The Story, I've cavorted and gambolled and jived and quickstepped with riff-raff and rabble that I would not normally give the time of day.

With Dirk Coetzee, I shared a slow and intimate shuffle. I led and he followed as we made our way through many a night and into the next day. With Ferdi Barnard, I did a hot and steamy tango, edging him ever closer to a gaping void. With many I whirled around in a crafty two-step, guiding them towards the confessional while making them believe we were actually dancing to the same tune.

Fifteen months after my pas de deux with death on the Congo, my girlfriend Sam left me (fortunately, only temporarily) and I plunged into a therapeutic bout of writing. Television, unrivalled in its power and influence, is an exceptionally shallow and trivial medium.

I've sometimes spent a month in a faraway location or hunted down a villain or ruffian for weeks in order to claim thirty or sixty minutes of a viewer's time and attention. That is the nature of television documentaries and current affairs programmes, but no matter how visually evocative they are, they don't reveal what happens behind the scenes or what I've smelt or felt or endured on the journey into people's living rooms.

Most of the stories in this book are the untold anecdotes, epics and narratives that lie behind my years as a television journalist. This is not an autobiography in the style or grandeur of Max du Preez's Pale Native or Aidan Hartley's The Zanzibar Chest, but rather a collection of events and encounters with extraordinary people in places where 'ordinary' people generally don't go.

The journey stretches from the last, dark days of apartheid and its aberrations to the apocalyptic events in several African states around and since the dawn of the new millennium. Juxta-posed between these cataclysmic developments are what I call the whores, hoods and hooligans - gangsters and their molls, con men and their rackets, opiates and their slaves. There are also tales of inyangas (black witches) concocting muti from human flesh and innocent girls being trafficked into prostitution.

In addition to Jan, who first came up with the idea, and Allieu, who unwittingly provided the title, far too many people have in some way contributed to this book to name here. Among them are outstanding editors, distinguished colleagues and supportive friends, to say nothing of a host of remarkable people, from near and far and both good and bad, that I've been privileged to meet and spend time with and who, sometimes, became the subject of my stories.

Some have been friends and colleagues for a very long time and I can only laud their support and understanding. Some have had a remarkable influence on my career, while others have stood by me through turbulent times. Only some are identified on the pages that follow, but all their names are engraved on my heart. A special mention is due to Sam for so much love and understanding, especially during my long periods of absence while writing this book.

A brilliant team at Zebra Press stands behind Dances with Devils. A special word of appreciation to Marlene Fryer, Robert Plummer and, above all, Marlene Burger. I came to know Marlene a long time ago as a resolute journalist; now she's proven herself an outstanding editor as well.

This is not necessarily a collection of my best stories, merely those that have remained glued to my mind. In each and every one there is something or someone I will remember for the rest of my life. In twenty years of finding and exposing the very worst that humanity has to offer, I have seen and touched and encountered things that no education can prepare one for. Quite recently, a colleague wrote of me:

'If it is indeed the case that a journalist's hands are dirty, those of Jacques Pauw must be filthy. In fact, I suspect his whole body is covered in a layer of grime, having spent so much time in the sewers of society.'

Thankfully, though not nearly often enough, I have also found purity and goodness and hope and caring along the way. Many times, fox-trotting and doing the hustle with despicable human beings knotted my guts and forced puke to my throat. But in the end, I took their hands and we danced.
