About: A Journey to Exile. The Story of a Namibian Freedom Fighter

A Journey to Exile: The Story of a Namibian Freedom Fighter, presents the narrative of the formative years of the writer, Keshii Pelao Nathanael. It is also the story of the birth of the Swapo Youth League (SYL). The difficulty of schooling and the urge to work as an alternative through the notorious labour contract system for the Owambos (SWANLA) emerges through Keshii's story. It becomes clear that the young Keshii had a clear vision combined with a strong ambition. The writer is a spellbinder. The reader is held enthralled not only by the narration of events but also by the bravery and courage of the author and those around him during the birth and early development of SYL. The holding of the youth congress at Oniipa will go down in history as one of the most significant pro-democracy acts within Namibia during the liberation struggle.

The writer takes us through the story of his exile in Zambia. The reader is given a glimpse into the problems caused by the generation gap, petty jealousies and learns of the full-scale power struggle within the liberation movement. Clearly the 'old guard' had their agenda and intended to 'dismantle' the young people, fresh from Namibia, through undemocratic means which eventually culminated in detentions, killings and disappearances. In Namibia, many writings of the liberation period are full of self-glorification and falsification. They follow the old adage: success has many mothers; but failure has none. The narration of events in this book, by contrast, is factually correct and chronologically accurate. A Journey to Exile: The Story of a Namibian Freedom Fighter will add a new dimension of understanding to the early history of Swapo Youth League (SYL) during the liberation years in Namibia.
