This guidebook to NamibRand Nature Reserve originated in the form of two booklets on the flora and the fauna of NamibRand, the drafts of which were compiled by Louise Clapham while working as a guide at Wolwedans from 1995 to 2004. During this time, she acquired a consuming fascination for the flora of this unique area, spent many hours collecting and identifying the various plants, and constructing a flora of the area. These two draft booklets were subsequently edited by Danica Shaw and Nils Odendaal, both then wardens of NamibRand, and subsequently compiled into a single, more comprehensive guidebook for NamibRand Nature Reserve. Further contributions from various other specialist advisors and sources have since been incorporated. These include Dr. Antje Burke, Dr. George Tucker, Dr. John Irish, Dr. John Kinahan, Louise Clapham, Ken Hart, Dr. Morris Gosling, Nicole Ulrich and Dr. Florian Weise. The plant and animal chapters of this guide also draw extensively on "The Living Deserts of Southern Africa", which is highly recommended for further information on desert adaptations. A Guidebook to NamibRand Nature Reserve is intended to provide an overview of the region as an aid to enhancing the visitor's experience and enjoyment in exploring the area and its desert habitats, and in getting to know its uniquely adapted plants, animals and other features.
