Warwick Tarboton war bereits als Kind ein begeisteter Vogelbeobachter, studierte dann jedoch Geologie am St Stithians College in Johannesburg und an der Universität Wit, um 1966 als Geologe ins Berufsleben zu starten. Wenige Jahre später wechselte er das berufliche Fach und, nach einem weiteren Besuch und Abschluß an der Universität im englischen Sheffield (MSc 1972), in die Ornithologie. Als Vogelexperte arbeitete Warwick Tarboton die nächsten 22 Jahre für das Transvaal Directorate of Nature Conservation und promovierte im Jahr 1991 über das Balzverhalten der African Jacana. Warwick Tarboton, der zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Beiträge und Vogelführer geschrieben hat, erhielt für seine Leistungen in der ornithologischen Forschung den Gill Memorial Medal (1996) und den Stevenson-Hamilton Award (2007). Er ist seit 1958 Mitglied des BirdLife South Africa, dessen Präsident er von 1996 bis 2000 war, der Zoloogical Society of South Africa, der British Ecological Society, des South Africa Institute of Ecologists and Enviro Scientists, der American Birding Association, der World Dragonfly Association und der Societas Internationalis Odonatologica. Mit seiner Ehefrau und Co-Autorin Michele Tarboton, lebte er am Rande des Waterberg in der Provinz Limpopo.
