Tony Robertson wurde am 27.10.1964 in England geboren und verbrachte seine Kindheit weitgehend in Sambia, Kanada und Südafrika, wo er an der University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg Zoologie studierte und 1985 mit dem BSc abschloß. Tony Robertson war daraufhin einige Jahre am Department of Zoology der University of Cambridge in Groß Britannien tätig und legte im Jahr 1993 den Master-Abschluß an der University of Edinburgh in Schottland ab. Seit 1996 ist Tony Robertson im Dienst von Unternehmensberatungen auf den Gebieten der Ornithologie, GIS- und Datenaufbereitung zur Unterstützung kommunaler Naturschutzprojekte und als Co-Autor für landeskundliche Werke, in Namibia tätig.
