Der Biologe Phillip A. R. Hockey, Jahrgang 1956, war gebürtiger Engländer und erlangte 1977 das BSc honours degree an der Edinburgh University. 1979 wanderte er nach Südafrika aus, wurde Angestellter des Percy FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology und promovierte 1983 an der University of Cape Town. Phil Hockey war ein weitgereister und anerkannter Spezialist für Watvögel über die, und andere ornithologische Themen, er zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Beiträge, Monographien, populärwissenschaftliche Bücher und Vogelführer geschrieben hat, oft in Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Fachautoren. Neben einem Lehrstuhl in Biologie an der University of Cape Town hielt Professor Phil Hockey seit 2008 auch die Position des Direktors des Percy FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology inne. Am 24.01.2013 verstarb der Preisträger der Stevenson-Hamilton Medal of the Zoological Society of Southern Africa an den Folgen einer Krebserkrankung.
