Nick Norman, geboren und aufgewachsen in KwaZulu-Natal, studierte von 1963 bis 1968 Geologie (MA) an der University of Natal in Durban. Er war viele Jahre in der Exploration von Bodenschätzen in weiten Teilen der Welt tätig, darunter in Regionen Afrikas und Südamerikas (Chile von 1989 bis 1991). Seit den 1970er Jahren bekleidete Nick Norman Führungsaufgaben im Vorstand der Geologcial Society of South Africa und machte sich in späteren Jahren als Berater für geologische Fragen selbständig. In dieser Zeit erschienen seine populären geologischen Fachbücher. Mit seiner Frau und zwei Kindern lebt der Geologe in Franschhoek, Südafrika.
