Johan Marais ist Unternehmer, Naturwissenschaftler und Fotograf, der wesentlich zum Reptilienschutz im südlichen Afrika beigetragen und zahlreiche Vorträge zu diesem Zweck gehalten hat. Johan Marais ist ehemaliger Vorsitzender der Herpetological Association of Africa, ist Mitglied der Crocodile Specialist Group (Species Survival Commission), der World Conservation Union und Vorsitzender des South Africa Reptile Conservation Assessment. Johan Marais hat Bücher, Aufsätze und Artikel verfaßt und ist derzeit für den Masters Degree an der University of the Witwatersrand gemeldet.
