Ian Sinclair wurde in Nordirland geboren und wuchs dort auf. Schon in jungen Jahren war er ein begeisterter Vogelkundler und strebte eine Betätigung in diesem Fach an. Lange vor den heute zahlreichen Veranstaltern von ornithologischen Safaris, bot Ian Sinclair solche für Vogelbegeisterte aller Art und zu vielen Regionen der Welt an. Heute gilt er im südlichen Afrika, wo er seit vielen Jahren lebt, mit über 2000 dokumentierten Sichtungen und den meisten Erstbeobachtungen, als erfolgreichster Ornithologe des Subkontinents. Auch als Unterweiser und Expeditionsleiter gilt die Erfahrung und Hingabe Ian Sinclairs unerreicht und hat er hat, neben dem Südlichen Afrika, auch Äthiopien, Tansania, Kenia, Gabun, Marokko, Kamerun, Uganda und zahlreiche Inseln des Indischen Ozeans bereist. Obwohl er sich aus Altersgründen aus der gewerblichen Betätigung zurückgezogen hat, steht Ian Sinclair einigen ornithologischen Projekten beratend zur Seite und ist Autor und Co-Autor (mit Peter Ryan) von über zwanzig, sehr erfolgreichen Vogelbüchern.
