Colin Paterson-Jones hat ein besonderes Interesse an den Wildblumen des südlichen Afrika und ihrer Wechselwirkung mit Vögeln, Tieren und Insekten. Er hat zahlreiche Fachbücher geschrieben, zum Teil in Co-Autorenschaft mit dem Wildblumenexperten John Manning, darunter The Garden Route (1990), Fynbos - South Africa's Unique Floral Kingdom (1995), Namaqualand - A Succulent Desert (1999). Beautiful Wild Flowers (1996), The Cape Floral Kingdom (1997), The Protea Family in Southern Africa (2000), Southern African Wild Flowers - Jewels of the Veld (2004) and Wild Flowers of South Africa (2006), Table Mountain Walks (1991) und Garden Route Walks (1992). Im Jahr 1995 wurde er mit dem Percy Sergeant Award der Botanical Society of South Africa für seinen herausragenden Beitrag im Bereich der botanischen Fotografie ausgezeichnet.
