South Africa has a rich botanical heritage, with one of the world's six floral kingdoms contained within its boundaries. Many of the plant species of this rich flora are under threat of extinction. One of the main threats comes from the spread of introduced species. These plants were either introduced by accident, or were deliberately brought over as crops, shade trees or ornamental plants. Deliberate introductions were usually, but not entirely, carried out long before the potential danger was realised. The risks posed by alien and invasive species are now known to be enormous as they are capable of transforming landscapes, eliminating ndigenous species and threatening the entire ecosystem. Whereas the UK has around a dozen alien weeds that could be called threatening, South Africa has several hundred; the effort required to control them differs accordingly. In South Africa, the task of creating awareness of this problem, the plant culprits and future threats remains an enormous one and awareness at all levels is needed. I am familiar with Olive's previous books and I know they are the ideal way to bring this problem to the fore. BGCI, with over 500 member botanic gardens and headquarters here in Kew, considers it vital to promote an interest in plants, how to grow them and how to protect them. I am sure Clive Bromilow's new book will further stimulate the interest required in South Africa and beyond. Colour photographs, interesting facts and background information along with easy identification guides will bring this subject not only to the farmers and experts but also to amateur gardeners and the wider public. I am also well aware that one cannot fully appreciate the beauty of indigenous gardens or even ecosystems unless one is aware of which species do not belong there.
