Chosen from Lindsaye McGregor's and Erica Moodie's book Wineries of the Cape this is their impression from Diemersdal Estate: This family farm is on the northern side of Durbanville on a scenic back road less travelled than the more concentrated Tygerberg Valley Road section of the wine route.

Wine runs in the Louws' blood, six generations of the family have made wine at the estate since it was bought in 1885. The current incumbent is Thys Louw, who took over the reins from his father Tienie. In 1698, Simon van der Stel granted this kind to free burgher Hendrik Sneewind. The farm changed hands to Captain Diemer when he married the widow Sneewind and Diemersdal was established. An inventory, found in an old leather-bound book that dates back to 1705, lists 45 wine barrels, a wine press and glass bottles, indicating that wine has been made on the estate for over three centuries. The farm covers 340 hectares with 180 of those under vines, which grow in deep red Hutton soils on the northern and southern slopes of the Dorstberg. The vineyards are cooled by mists that roll in each afternoon from the nearby Atlantic Ocean. The grapes are grown under dryland conditions (no irrigation is used), which allows them to ripen evenly and develop concentrated flavours. The rest of the farm is grazing land and renosterveld. This is one of the most threatened vegetation types in the Cape winelands and at Diemersdal they are working hard at conserving this valuable asset for future generations. You can taste Diemersdal's range of classic wines in the cosy confines of the tasting room or at an outside table. Sir Lambert Sauvignon Blanc, their joint-venture with Sir Lambert Wines in Lamberts Bay on the West Coast, is also available for tasting and purchase. The old stable has been restored and is now an atmospheric restaurant (open for lunch daily), where gifted chef Nic van Wyk (previously at La Colombe in Constantia, and Terroir and Kleine Zalze Lodge in Stellenbosch) serves up food offering the flavours of the countryside; herbs are from the kitchen garden, the pickles and preserves are homemade and the bread is freshly baked on the premises. The plat du jour lunch menu changes daily but Friday lunch is always classic bistro fare, sirloin steak with homemade chips. Saturday's menu features burgers, gourmet sandwiches and a salad of the day. You can also enjoy sunset tapas on a Friday evening (booking advisable) or a traditional roast with all the trimmings for Sunday lunch (reservations only). Diemersdal wines are available in the restaurant at cellar-door prices.
