Size: ± 581730 km². Locality: Botswana is a landlocked country situated in southern Africa, just north of South Africa, between 20°00'E and 29°00'E and 18°15'S and 27°00'S. The northern two-thirds lie within the tropics. Population: ±1,6 million, one of the lowest population densities In Africa with a high population growth of ±2,8% per annum. Rainfall: The rainy season is from November to April, with a peak In January and February. Rainfall varies from ±250 mm per annum in the south-west to ±650 mm in the north-east. Temperature: Summer temperatures peak from October to December at 35°C-40°C. Other times it ranges between 28°C and 33°C. Winter temperatures (May to August) in the north are mild (24°C and 26°C) but colder In the south (±19°C) and it occasionally drops below freezing at night. Topography: Botswana is a flat country with only a few low hills. 80% of the country consists of deep Kalahari sands from the Kalahari Desert. The Okavango Delta lies within the desert sand in the northwest of the country. To the south-east of the delta are large salt pans, the Makgadikgadi Pans. The eastern extreme of the country is called the 'hardveld', which consists of a variety of rock types and outcrops. Local time: GMT plus two hours. Electricity: 230V AC / 50 Hz. Both square and round-pin wall sockets are used. It is a good idea to carry both kinds of adaptors. Telephone: The international access code for Botswana is +267. Banks: The 3 main commercial banks in the country are: First National Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and Barclays Bank Botswana. Currency: The monetary unit is the Pula and Thebe, one Pula is equal to 100 Thebe. American Express, Visa, Mastercard and Diners Club cards usually accepted but not at National Park Gates Currency regulations It is permitted to bring any amount of foreign currency into and out of the country, as long as It was declared on entry. Only P500 in cash is allowed to be taken out of Botswana. Passports: All people over the age of 16 are required to have a passport. A child under 16 must be accompanied by the parent on whose passport he/she is mentioned. Length Of Stay: One can stay for a maximum of three months in a 12-month period. At the border you will be issued with a maximum of 30 days, which can be extended. Vehicle levy: Upon entering the country, a ±P50 road levy is charged for verhicles & trailers (amount may change). Speed limits The speed limit on national roads is 120 km/h, but when passing a village on the main road,It is 80 km/h, and in towns it is 60 km/h. There are many speed traps all along the main routes. Driver's licenses: It is obligatory to carry your driver's license at all times while driving. Licenses from all neighbouring countries are accepted in Botswana. Vehicle papers should accompany the vehicle at all times. Seat belts: It is obligatory to wear seat belts at all times.
