The Rooiberg Mountain is in the southern Cederberg on the farm of Nuwerus which is owned by Louise Esterhuizen and Steven Windell. The crags were originally discovered by Tony Lourens and are described in his climber's guide, Rooiberg, Southern Cederberg.
It was David Mercer, along with Craig Turvey who made the crag their own by putting up a generous clutch of quality multi pitch trad routes. Over the past few years Rooiberg has grown into one of the best moderate climbing areas in the Cederberg, offering about 15 sport routes and many single and multi pitch trad routes. From Cape Town the most direct route to Nuwerus Is via Ceres. From Ceres, drive over the Gydo Pass and on towards Op-die-Berg. Just after Op-die-Berg, take a turn-off on the right signposted Cederberge. Follow the road, which soon becomes dirt, for about 50 km. After passing Mount Ceder Guest Farm, continue over the next pass to reach Nuwerus on the right. From Dwarsrlvler or Kromrivier, gain the road that leads out of the Cederberg In the direction of Ceres and drive for a few kilometres until you come to the Cederberg Oasis on your left. Continue down the pass for a few more kilometres and you will see a the sign to Nuwerus on your left. The farm has good camping and chalets. It has a large boma with a huge fireplace, outdoor pub and DSTV, with Steven and Louise offering great farm-style hospitality. There is also a shop which sells the basics and a huge swimming pool which is very welcome after a hot day on the hill. Besides climbing there is a 12 km hiking trail and other short walks that explore the kloofs and mountains in the area. The walls and crags of Rooiberg face more-or-less south west, which means that climbing here can be enjoyed most of the year round except In the dead of winter, when the wall hardly sees any sun and Is rather chilly. In the summer months the wall is in deep shade till about 1 to 2 pm. So the plan is to get up there early, crank till lunch time, then drop down to the camp for a swim and some relaxation. The rock is typical Cederberg sandstone and mostly of excellent quality. A huge amphitheatre capped by an Impressive roof dominates the wall and gives the crag a superb atmosphere. There Is also a great tea cave at the base which remains shady till late in the afternoon. Please note that many of the single-pitch routes are quite long and it is advisable to use a 60 m rope. If there is no bolt count next to the route name, then the route is trad! Please enter all new routes in the new routes book at the reception office. [...]
