North Rodesian born Leon Nell describes the so called Ostrich Capital of South Africa, Oudtshoorn, in this attractive guide.

Leon Nell

Many roads lead to Oudtshoorn, the town regarded as the capital of the Little Karoo. It lies on the banks of the Grobbelaars River, about 35 kilometres from the Swartberg Mountains and the Cango Caves. The Garden Route lies beyond the Outeniqua Mountains in the south. The two main routes from Oudtshoorn to the coast are via the Outeniqua Pass and via the Robinson Pass to Mossel Bay, while the increasingly popular R62 heads eastwards to De Rust and Uniondale. Towards the west are the other Little Karoo towns of Calitzdorp, Ladismith, Van Wyksdorp, and Montagu. For those travelling north into the interior of South Africa via Meiringspoort and the dramatic Swartberg Pass, Oudtshoorn is strategically situated. Oudtshoorn is well-known for its ostrich farming and was the centre of an ostrich feather boom in the nineteenth century. Game ranches, boasting a variety of indigenous and exotic animals, are a more recent addition to Oudtshoorn's list of tourist attractions. Throughout the area the striking Swartberg range looms from the north. Near Oudemuragie, between Oudtshoorn and De Rust, Spitskop (2130 metres) surges skywards. It is one of the highest peaks in the area. […]
