How to use Getaway Guide to Namibia: The first 10 chapters of this book are filled with information on Namibia, its history, people and natural environment, with notes on planning your trip, getting to your destination, staying safe and other practical aspects of travelling around Namibia. Some of the suggestions and recommended equipment are only applicable for the wilder parts of the country and should not be necessary if you are staying in and around the larger towns. Chapter 11 explores the capital Windhoek and chapters 12 to 14 the southwest of the country. The central western parts are covered in chapters 15 to 18. Chapter 19 looks at the stretches into the Kalahari. Chapters 20 to 23 are devoted to the northern regions, while chapters 24 to 26 cover the far north of Namibia and chapters 27 and 28 take you inland to explore Kaokoland and Damaraland. This guide can be used to plan a trip to or travel throughout Namibia, on-road or off-road, either with your own vehicle or a hired one, and even on public transport. Bus routes, road conditions and fuel availability, accommodation and food - it's all there. Namibia is so vast and its sights so spread out that there is no one, ideal route through the country. This has kept me from outlining a single round trip - so choose your own route and then work your way through those particular chapters here. Prices quoted are in Namibian dollars (N$), which are on a par with South African rands (R) and are generally for residents of South Africa and other southern African countries.
