Mike Copeland

Mozambique is bouncing back. Holiday-makers are returning to the beautiful beaches and coral reefs, the restocked game parks and the legendary big-game fishing so popular in local waters. From five-star luxury in the south, to wild, no-star adventures up north, Mozambique has something for everyone. Investors, too, are returning and finding that there is profit to be made in the reconstruction and development of the country now that 40 years of strife have well and truly ended. Streets are being cleaned up and buildings renovated and painted, although bureaucracy and red tape may still make it difficult for Mozambicans to beautify their properties. Those who remember 'the old days' will still recognise a lot in the new Mozambique. You are still likely to bump into a neighbour from Jo'burg in Maputo, or your neighbour from Harare in Beira. The beer is cold and refreshing and the prawns delicious, plentiful and cheap. The nightlife in Maputo is wild, and the tide still goes out so far that, to go for a swim, you need first to go for a jog. Most of the tourism originates from South Africa - even non-African visitors usually enter via that country - which means that most tourists travel no further than Vilankulo and the Bazaruto Archipelago. It is a great pity (although some may consider it a blessing) that the wild-and-wonderful north is not visited by more tourists. In this guide, I have tried to cover all the regions as comprehensibly as possible and urge you to explore them all. Mozambique is one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in Africa, if not the world. It is changing fast, especially prices, and guide books can't always keep up with the developments. So please feel free to let me know where this book needs updating or improving. If you have ambitions to travel further afield in Africa (and I think everyone should), look out for my other books, Getaway Guide - Cape to Cairo, Getaway Guide to Namibia and Getaway Guide to Botswana.
