About: Traditional Songs of Namibia (CD Mascato Youth Choir of Namibia)

When the then Mascato Youth Choir of Namibia was launched in 1996, no-one could have predicted the bright future which lay ahead. About 70 teenagers from 14 to 20 years were selected from 350 young hopefuls who auditioned. Their social cultural music and economic backgrounds reflected Namibia's rich diversity, but they shared an enthusiastic love of singing, a passion that has become their trademark. On this recording Namibia's rich linguistic heritage is reflected by the performance of Damara and Nama songs, with their distinctive click sounds, and songs in Otjiherero, Owambo, Kavango and Tswana. Other songs come from South Africa and Cameroon. The Mascato Youth Choir of Namibia has appeared alongside other choirs from Namibia and abroad, and is frequently called upon to sing for visiting heads of state and other foreign dignitaries. Back thenconducted by Ena Venter, who assembled the choir with colleague Vera Malherbe, the choir's prizes include trophies, medals and cash awards. Foremost among their supporters, donors, fans and friends is Mascato Namibia, the company that funded the production of this CD, Traditional Songs of Namibia. The songs were arranged by W. Liebenberg, Niel van der Watt, Johann van der Sandt, A. van der Merwe, A. van Wyk and R.-L. Hofmeyr and are in parts accompanied by the Namibia Marimbas.
