The novel The Kupferberg Mining Company was inspired by Johan Beyers earlier travels through Namibia and especially the Skeleton Coast Park which, at that time, was a prime example of a pristine desert wilderness. The book was written at a time when the Namibian Defence Force was actively involved in a civil war in the DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo) where rebel forces, backed by Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi were trying to overthrow the government of President Laurent Kabila, who was later assassinated by one of his own bodyguards. At the same time, in Namibia, security forces of Namibia and Angola on both sides of their common border were trying to flush out suspected Unita rebels reportedly operating in the area.

These rebels were blamed for attacks on both the local population and tourists travelling through the area. Jonas Savimbi, leader of the UNITA movement, was later killed in an ambush close to the Zambian border. The Skeleton Coast Park, an area which was widely considered to be one of the most ecologically sensitive desert wilderness areas of the world, was opened up for prospecting and mining activities. The Kupferberg Mining Company has existed in secret, until now. And that very existence is now at threat. While on an excursion to Pelican Bay, Rudolf de Wet notices armed officers in the distance. He finds murdered tourists. When shots are fired in his direction, the questions seem endless: What is going on?
