Description:

The Dictionary of South African Painters and Sculptors fills an enormous gap in the reference literature on African art. Nowhere else can the reader or researcher find so much up-to-date and easily accessible information on the artists, past and present, of the Southern African region. More than 1600 painters and sculptors are listed alphabetically, the criteria for inclusion being artists who have lived or worked in South Africa and Namibia and who have made a lasting contribution to its artistic life.

This broad spectrum takes in the Dutch, English and French pioneers, artists trained overseas who settled or spent some time in the area, and the young professionals of today who are products of the established art institutions in the Republic. Intensive research on each artist has been undertaken, supplementing work done by earlier scholars, to supply the following data wherever possible: birth and death dates, mode of artistic expression, studies, a personal profile, exhibitions, awards, publications by the artist, galleries where represented, public commissions and references to the artist in other literature.

Over 80 full-page colour illustrations are included as examples of the diversity and accomplishment of the artists represented. The book has been over five years in the making and has been sponsored by Everard Read, widely known as an art dealer in South Africa since 1944. The Dictionary of South African Painters and Sculptors (including Namibia) will undoubtedly become the authoritative biographical survey of South African artists. Few countries can boast of such a comprehensive and well-researched reference text on their own artistic heritage.
