Description:

Reptiles and amphibians fill an important ecological niche in the environment. As predators, they keep insect and rodent populations in check, and they in turn are eaten by numerous predators like mongooses, birds of prey, and even their own kind. While modern-day reptiles may not hold the mystique and glory of their ancestral dinosaur kind that roamed the earth over 120 million years ago, their diversity today rivals that of their evolutionary past. Southern Africa has a temperate to subtropical climate and a wide range of habitats that is conducive to reptile and amphibian diversity. The unique habitats in the subregion have resulted in high levels of endemism. Endemic species are those which are unique to a region and found nowhere else in the world. The subregion is host to no less than 153 species of snake; 306 lizards; 17 amphisbaenians or worm lizards; 27 tortoises, terrapins and turtles; one crocodile, and 148 species of frogs.
