Description:

Damaraland Flora is the third book illustrated by Christine Marais that introduces interesting plants to travellers in specific regions. Its goal is to increase an awareness of our remarkable flora as well as to provide information for the curious and concerned. Damaraland Flora includes plants that are prominent during the dry season because of their peculiarities or because they are common or obvious beside tourist routes. The common names have been restricted to those used in Namibia. Consequently there are few English names. The rich assortment of local names is often very appropriate. North western Namibia now falls into the new political districts of Kunene and Erongo. The words Kaokoveld and Damaraland have however been retained as they are still commonly used. According to the Vegetation Map of Namibia, southern Damaraland falls into the Semi-desert and Savanna Transition (Escarpment Zone) and the northern part lies in the Mopane Savanna. Arid areas are ecologically sensitive and although protected species have been identified in the text, it is hoped that all plants will be accorded more than the usual respect by visitors to the region.
