Description:

Birds of East Africa, a handy pocket guide, has been designed as a quick, easy-to-use reference in the field. The entries are concise and highlight the most important or distinctive characteristics of each species. Common names in both English and Swahili have been included, as well as the scientific names. The length of the bird (the average length from tip of bill to end of tail) is also given. Symbols have been used to indicate where male and female differ in size. Distribution maps for each species entry show at a glance the areas in which the bird occurs. Photographs have been selected to show the characteristic features of each bird. Unless otherwise specified, bird images feature adults. Where marked plumage differences occur between breeding and non-breeding, male and female, or adult, immature and juvenile birds, this has, in most cases, been illustrated. Where possible, photographs of similar species have been included. The habitat map opposite depicts the different vegetation zones that characterise the region. A glossary of terms and labelled diagrams of a bird are given. Alternative common names appear in the index. Birds of East Africa is an invaluable guide for visitors to national parks and the many areas in East Africa that are rich in birdlife.
