Description:

The first part of Bandiet out of Jail was originally published in London in 1974 under the title Bandiet: Seven Years in a South African Prison. Despite being banned in South Africa, a few copies did make the rounds and earned it quite a reputation in clandestine circles. The text finally became generally available to South African readers when it was published by David Philip in 1989. It was then first published by Random House in 2000. The memoirs reproduces the original 1974 text in full and adds a collection of related work by the author. This includes subjects that could not be mentioned at the time he wrote the original book, when many of his prison colleagues were still inside. It also includes a number of poems and other pieces written either in prison or subsequently, in the context of Lewin's life up to the time of his serving with the South African Truth & Reconciliation Commission.
