Description:

Wild flowers of Namaqualand, a project of CapeNature (Western Cape Nature Conservation Board) and the Botanical Society of South Africa, introduces nearly 600 species, highlighting those most commonly found, most conspicuous, spectacular or interesting, as well as endemics. The Namaqualand is one of the most fascinatingly diverse areas in South Africa and home to thousands of some 3800 plant species, many of them endemic to this region and many threatened with extinction according to the lUCN's Red-list of species in the area. As the interest in, and knowledge of this diverse flora grows, it has been necessary to repeatedly revise the Wild Flowers of Namaqualand, and this is now its fourth edition. This area is also home to the Knersvlakte Nature Reserve, one of the crown jewels in the country's rich botanical treasure trove and was added to the national network of protected areas in September 2014. The sheer diversity and high numbers of endemic plant species found in the Namaqualand is what makes it such a vital and popular area for local and international botanists who spend months at a time conducting extensive research here.
