Description:

Every now and then a book comes out of the mass of written material poured out by thousands of writers which makes one pause, read, reflect and read again with renewed pleasure. 'The Plains of Camdeboo' is a book which is a unique combination of history, natural history, autobiography and research in many fields and is a celebration of the beauty of the Karoo. It not only presents much of the age-old pageant of nature in a storied land, but exudes the triumph of the human spirit, is like one of those delightful campfire conversations which drag late into the night but which, regretably, are over too soon. Writer Eve Palmer recreated with lovely prose the magical landscape of the Karoo and the East Cape where she grew up. The Plains of Camdeboo is not the story of the Palmer family, although they impinge upon it at times. It is the story of farm Cranemere, twenty thousand acres in area, on a great plain towards the southern tip of Africa. This is a countryside either completely overlooked or greatly slandered. The Palmers, in 1986, had been here for one hundred and six years. And still are today.
